Clear Glass
Of all the types of glass, clear glass is the most common and widely used, prized for its transparency and versatility. It serves as the foundational material for countless applications, from windows and doors to tabletops and shower enclosures.
The modern production standard for high-quality, flat clear glass is the float glass process. This industrial method involves melting raw materials, primarily silica sand, soda ash, and limestone, in a furnace at extremely high temperatures (around 1500°C). This molten mixture is then poured onto a shallow bath of molten tin. Because the molten glass is less dense than the tin, it floats on the surface, spreading out to form a perfectly flat and uniform ribbon. The glass is then carefully cooled in a controlled process called annealing, which relieves internal stresses and strengthens the final product. This method results in glass with exceptional clarity and a distortion-free finish.
Clear glass is available in a wide array of standard thicknesses to suit various structural and design needs. For projects requiring this fundamental material, Norfinch Glass offers a comprehensive selection of clear glass in numerous thicknesses. Learn More
